Well, im back again. I know its been too long but they say, its never too late. So here it goes:
Loving each day, if it’s our last, dancing all night and having a blast- Boyzone
Well, that’s exactly the way I’m spending my days here, though they are surely not my last days but since I want to make the most of each moment I spend here I’m treating them as one. The last six months have totally been a roller coaster ride for me. Traveling, partying, working and studying. I should surely consider myself as a multitasker after being able to carryout the above mentioned things together. The anxiety of the first snowfall, of being able to get the best deal in the black Friday sale and of the announcement of the President of the United States are few of the most special and memorable moments I’ve witnessed in these past few months.
I remember in my last PDJ I mentioned my excitement towards the coming of Thanksgiving and Christmas and certainly both these occasions stood up to its hype. Besides drooling over the thought of the image of huge turkey resting on a dining table with loads of food for the thanksgiving day, I think its the day after thanksgiving that people yearn for, also very well known as the Black Friday. I certainly would cherish that day because that’s when I made my first and most precious investment; a laptop. Though owning it was not an easy affair at all. One has to stand outside the shop starting from 1 or 2 in the night in order to be able to grab the best deal that particular shop was offering. Same was with me but at the end of the day it all seemed worth an effort when you finally have your prize in your hand. Just after the Thanksgiving came the day I believe not only the Americans but people throughout the world were waiting for, the Declaration of the 44th President of United Sates. It was an awestruck moment for me when Mr. Barrack Obama was finally announced the winner. Sitting at home all alone, I just sat there on my couch and watched the speech made by both Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain. Meanwhile through my window I also happened to noticed the Empire States with its blue, red and white light on top, truly in sync with the event that was happening.
I won’t be wrong if I said that NY is a place to be during Christmas. The tinkling snowflakes, the welcoming angels and the magnificently lit up Christmas tree at Rockefeller is a must see. Even the artistically decorated windows of all the famous outlets like Macy’s and Lord & Taylor were crowd attractions. But the midnight mass at St Francis of Assisi church on 24th night was something that completed the essence of the season. It was also one of the moments I missed my family and friends back home very dearly but being with my other family here which by default are the Mountbatten interns was an interesting experience by itself. I would have also loved to experience the ball drop at Times Square on New Year’s but my friends backed out on me, terrified of all the cold wintry breeze and crowd of people that they’ll have to come across. Any which way I still managed to be surrounded by a loads of people at the stroke of 12 somewhere in New York and spent my New Year in a way an American would have, so no regrets.
Another adventure and something that I one always wanted to do as a child was visiting the Walt Disney Park. This happened out of the blue right in the first week of January. My friend managed to get free ticket to any of their park for 3 days. One thing I can’t help but mention is my journey to Orlando. In fact the second time I ever got onto a plane but this time I was all alone. It may not sound like a big deal now but at that moment it was, at least for me. It was also a nice place to be in January, away from the cold and snowy weather of New York and I remember I had to literally drag myself to the airport on my way back from the trip.
Besides all the partying and roaming, work also went on pretty smooth. Though the scene in the workplace was not a pleasant one because of the crisis which left nothing untouched. There was not much to do for a month or so besides bidding farewell to fellow colleagues. At this time the Cambridge assignment happened to be catalyst that kept me on the move and also helped me communicate better with the people at work. I had to speak to many at work, firstly to decide on what problem to work on and then confirm the solutions that I’ve come up with could be really worked out. I really had fun doing this assignment and the feedbacks from my professor were a great help all way long. The presentation was a great way to put forward my ideas that were in mind right from the time I commenced my work here, it helped so much that my views were highly appreciated by everyone and is already on it ways to being implemented. My overall involvement at work and the assignment also helped me earn very good reviews in my evaluation.
Well this assignment required a lot of work, and so a week's vacation to the west coast of US truly turned out to be break I ever wanted. Walking through the famous Beverly hills, rodeo drive and Hollywood boulevard in Los Angeles, glaring at the ultimate beauty of the grand canyon, walking by the lit up streets of Las Vegas and then finally strolling on the golden gate of San Francisco was almost a dream come true for me. I loved every bit about that trip and would recommend everyone visiting US to do it without fail. Coming from India, Mumbai were the temperature doesn’t go below 15 degree Celsius even in the winter season, and here in New York where the word cold means below 0 degrees plus wind running at the speed of 40 kmp was not at all easy. If not for the heaters at home I don’t think I would have survived it after all. Seeing the snow was exciting but just the first time, later it was never that pleasant to walk on. It is very beautiful to see the streets and the trees covered with snow, especially central park but only if one doesn’t slip on it, something that happened quite often with me probably because I always had the wrong shoe on me.
Its weird how I have managed to cover 11 states of US in just 6 months. In the past 21 years that I’ve spent in India I must have traveled to only 4 states to be precise. I realized it is very simple out here, maybe since I have the freedom to do whatever I want and don’t have to wait for an approval from my parents. Also, the fact that everything here is so organized that planning a trip isn’t difficult at all only one has to have sufficient funds to cover the expense. Every little thing is taken into consideration here, and the biggest example was Disney. From a small child of 3 years old to a person on a wheelchair, everyone is given equal opportunity to enjoy themselves. The incident of the plane crash at Hudson is also one event no one will ever forget. Everyone at work was rushing towards the window facing the river hoping to get a view of the plane. 155 people, all safe and sound and all thanks to the attempts of the great pilot who took the right decision at the right time. But it just doesn’t stop at that; it was also the quick action of the NY waterway that took charge of the entire situation at that very instant.
It is this transport and this organized culture that me and my fellow Indian interns will miss when we’ll be back in India. I know I have more 5 months to sit and think about all this but since the May interns are returning in the next few days, I’ve been spending a lot of time with them that made me think of these scenarios. Thinking of the crowded means of transportation with the extreme humid conditions really makes it an unpleasant thought to go back. It would be nice if we go there just for few months visit our family and friends, spend some quality time with them and then return to this beautiful place once again. Whoa!! Only if that could happen. Well, its just a thought.
It’s sad that in a few days I’ll have to say goodbye to our May interns. In the past 6 months they have more than friends to all of us. They have helped in so many ways; from guiding us to get the best deal on our beddings when we moved in, our Mountbatten assignments, links on traveling and many more things that might seem small but were important and necessary to be mentioned. In April I’ll be also bidding farewell to my 3 flat mates along with my 14 DBOI interns who are very close to me. The DBOI interns were more than family to me and seeing them go won’t be that easy. To be honest already there have been crying sessions that have taken place in the past few days when we all just sit and chat about our past adventures. Well we keep assuring them that they’ll get to see us in just about 5 months but it is of not much help at the moment. Also the time spent with my 3 flat mates is very special to me. When my room mate was moving out, these guys insisted on having some authentic Indian chicken curry and I was more than happy to be able to prepare one for them. That night we cooked the meal in the flat, someone got the appetizers, someone the desert, I was in charge of the main course. In the end it all turned out pretty well. Even after the meal was done, we all just say there on the dining table chatting for and hour or so, the may guys sharing their worries on job placements when they’ll be back and me and my room mate just talking about the things we’d done so far.
More 5 months to go but so much more is to be done. I do have lot of plans in place. One thing that I want to do for sure is the Hawaii island. Also small 2 to 3 days trip to Niagara falls and Cape Cod are places that I want to cover in the nice and hopefully warm summer. My interest in traveling has totally been triggered since the day I’ve stepped in and so if at all in the next PDJ I happened to mention visiting lot more places than I’ve mentioned above that it should not come as a surprise to any one. Besides traveling, there are few more things on my ’to do list’, the Broadway show to be one and also few of the famous museums in New York city . I’m anxious to see and know about many more places and also promise myself to continue to do so when I return to India. Its march now and officially the spring has been announced but I still don’t see the warmth setting in. I hope it does and I hope its sometime soon. Right now I’m just waiting for the right weather and also for the right balance in my bank account to fulfill my wishes. In a month or so I’ll mange to accomplish the two categories mentioned above and then I’ll be all set to experience the heat of the New York City.

Parting a sweet Sorrow
Below is the part of the speech, which i gave for my public speaking Exercise out here, but it is somthing i hav written on my own n not jotted down or picked up from the net...
( cant exactly write the same thing i said, coz it was kinda interactive so i had to mentiona few things in a different way)
I started of askin my audience, what exactly they felt when they wer on their way to new york that nite at the airport saying their final good byes. to my surprise i did get a good reply and exactly wot i was hoping for( though i had actually told one person to reply but the rest did it on thier own)...sshhh its s secret..haha
neways coming bk to the speech, now il paste the exact thing that i had told n so understand that i am speaking to an audience.
"I still can’t forget the time at the airport and I’m sure it’s the same with all of you. That night is so dear to all of us that most of us also have it mentioned in our PDJ’s( if u don kno wot PDJ is read my november posting). Bidding farewell to our near and dear ones, taking blessings from the elderly some by touching their feet, some with their hands folded while some would just give a long and a tight hug. Each one of us experiencing a feeling of sadness as well as joy within ourselves. Since we all knew very well that tough today we are sad about leaving them, just after a year when we come back we are going to see a big smile in each of those faces.
Parting is something we do every single day no matter how long the duration of the separation is. Be it while leaving from office though we know we’ll be showing up once again tomorrow or even while leaving one country not sure when we’ll see those people again. Especially these days it is become very common in my office with all of the recession bells ringing. It’s weird how I manage to feel so strongly for a few of them though I’ve known them for just about two months now. Parting is a sweet sorrow when you know you part only to meet again but with these people I doubt whether I’ll even cross path with them in the future in such a big city.
There are so many ways and things to say when people part their ways. ‘Good bye’ being the most common one. Then there are ‘See you soon’, ‘Catch you later’, ‘Godspeed’. Then those familiar with other languages might have also heard, ‘Adios’, ‘Chao’ and the famous ‘Sayonara, Sayonara'( i was actually singing it) haha don worry I wont sing the entire dong. It won’t be right on my part if I don’t mention the very famous ‘Hasta la vista Baby’ from Terminator 2 as one more way to say good bye. It is very common to see how many Hollywood and also the Bollywood directors use parting in their movies and end up with the best romantic and emotional scene ever. They know they just can’t go wrong here because that’s the easiest way for them to connect with the audience.
Some of the famous scenes from Hollywood that come to my mind are the movies ‘Casablanca’, ‘E.T’. And the epic of all time ‘Titanic were the handsome Jack parts forever from his beautiful Rose. For all my friends sitting here, I know for sure we all remember the scene from ‘Kuch Kuch hota hain’ were Sharukh Khan Runs behind the train, bidding farewell to his dear friend ‘Kajol’. The scene which still manages to fill our eyes with tear every time we see it.
There are so many instances of parting that we too have experienced so far. Be it the School or the college farewell. A day we dress up as best as possible but also a day when we are formally considered done with our institution to which we were connected since our childhood. Even before coming here Im sure all of us must have thrown at least one party celebrating our selection and also taking it as a last time to sit and enjoy with our family and friends at home.
The instances of parting are innumerous. Be it when a bride is leaving her present home where she grew up only to be welcomed to a whole new family. It is a very emotional moment for all especially for us in India. But one has to agree with me when I say that crying is again a mixture of the happiness we share with the bride for her lovely future wherever she goes. Parting is so constant and so continuous in ones life. It is true parting is always a sweet sorrow, but one may argue with me when I say what about death. My thoughts abt death is that, instead of crying over loosing someone, we should be happy that the person is now in peace under the hands of the almighty.
After sharing these thoughts I would just like to say and end with the words of Shakespeare from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, where in Juliet says “Good bye Good bye, parting is such a sweet sorrow, that I shall say good bye till it be morrow.”

PDJ....a polished version of personal diary
This is somthing I have to submit every quarterly while im here, its a kinda of a dairy wer i have mentioned most of the things i hav experienced so far rite here in NYC. Hope ul like it too
Personal Development Journal
It's a new world -
it's a new start
It's alive with the beating of young hearts
It's a new day -
it's a new plan
I've been waiting for you Here I am
- (Song by Bryan Adams)
Was the number I was listening to when the plane just landed at the Newark International Airport, in the United States of America. And ‘Yes’ I have been waiting for this day since a long long time. All the exhaustion just seem to disappear and suddenly I couldn’t help but smile for making it here. Friends, family, workplace, people without whom I wouldn’t do much; I had left them all and come here to start afresh. I still remember the way I was noticing each and every small thing while we were on our way to the hotel. The roads, the buildings, the people, I was mesmerized by every little thing I saw. How different it was from my home country, India. And here I was telling myself, “I’m going to make this the best year I’ve ever had.”
“One block from The Empire State building” was how I described the location of the hotel to my family where I was accommodated for the first two weeks. The stay at the hotel was a memorable one especially because of the company of two lovely people in my room. Sitting and watching T.V. with them, learning history of the episodes of some programs which I was watching for the first time, besides that also sharing our day to day knowledge of Manhattan gained by the daily visits to almost every known place in that region. We three got along so well that we also did the scavenger hunt together. This was the first time I actually wondered through out New York. Starting from the Woolworth building which has one of a kind architecture inside, then passing through the famous Wall Street which consists of Who’s Who of corporate America. Then covering the not so famous places but yet unique in their own way are SoHo and Chinatown. I’m sure I’ll be returning there once again but that time not with an intention to discover the place but to shop. We also gave a small visit to the Statue of George Washington in union Square as he too was a part of our Scavenger hunt questionnaire. In this one day I am sure I must have covered almost one fourth of New York.
Then one day I made a visit to Central Park to see Mr. David Blaine, the great magician doing his ‘hanging upside down over Central Park for 60 hours’ stunt. Back in India I would watch his shows with my younger brother who just admires him and today I got to see him live in front of me. I called up my brother that very moment and could very well sense how excited he was to hear that. The walk to Central Park itself was enjoyable in itself as we passed by some of the great shops and buildings of all time, the ones I had only seen on T.V. till date. Famous Statue of Atlas, Rockefeller Center, Trump Towers, Versace, Louis Vuitton showrooms and the place known for its gadgets, Apple Incorporated.
Everyday was just getting better than before, even work for that matter. Most of my friends were not that eager to start work, but I was. For me more New York was not one of the glamour and commercial call, but I saw it as the core of Business through out the world. And it proved so when the Wall Street Crisis started showing its effects the world over. Though back in India I used to check how the market was doing everyday, but here in the past few days the frequency of refreshing the Google Finance site was done in every 5 minutes. Everybody shouting on the floor, “Dow 500 points down”, “Lehman files for Bankruptcy”, “Merrill is sold”. Everybody tensed about their job, not only here but also back in Mumbai. My mom would call me up asking if everything was fine at work. She doesn’t understand much about the market but the news which was going around was enough for her to figure out that America is in trouble and so are the jobs of the people living here. My involvement in knowing how things are in the financial world was so deep that it also made me earn the title of ‘Analyst’ by my colleagues at work. I never expected that I’ll be able to get along so well and so fast with these people. Leaving aside the personal interests my official training was also not that difficult. I was aware that what I was going to take up here was completely different from what I did back in India, but I had done my homework, so to say. Still I never hesitated bugging my trainer with my doubts whenever I had them.
What I admire the most about the Americans is their attitude towards their work and their life. During weekdays stating from 8 in the morning till 5 in the evening these people work. I mean real serious work. But one also would not fail to notice their enthusiasm on Friday. ‘Thank God it’s Friday’ is what you get to hear from almost everybody on the floor on that day. Leaving from office they all directly head to parties which go on till early morning. I wished we followed the same practice in India, but I also know seeking permission from my parents for the late night outs would be a difficult task.
For me things were going well at work and also in my apartment. I enjoy the company of my flat mates and especially the time when we three girls encourage the 2 guys who are busy competing against each in a Wii Nintendo game. Also the time when I have the late night chat with my room-mate is very special to me. Showing each other pictures of our family and friends, flaunting the latest things we shopped and sharing our frustration in completing the assignments are few things which we do very often.
There are so many things that I’ve done so far which I would not have dared to do at home. For example there is this crazy thing we did one night. Five of my friends and me decided to go to Staten Island that too at 12:30 in the night. The journey was not bad if one ignores the freezing wind which was blowing right on our face. Path till WTC, then a walk for about half an hour and then a ferry ride which lasted for almost 25 minutes was how we made our way to Staten Island. Though we didn’t get to see much of that place in the dark but it was the Ferry Ride which was the best part of the trip. It was on that ride that I had the privilege to see the ‘Statue of Liberty’, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It wasn’t a great view I agree but it wasn’t bad either. On our way back we also found the famous Stock Exchange Bull all alone an all of grabbed this opportunity to have ourselves clicked with him.
What I am going to write now, is a recent addition of my Halloween experience. Racking my head so that it comes out with a nice costume idea since the start of the Halloween week and surfing net to see what all crazy things people have actually done so far just added on to my excitement for Halloween. Finally when the day arrived, I didn’t do much but still wore a dark make up and had put on some junky jewelries to not to look the way I usually do. We then finally reached the ever so crazy, wacky parade I have never seen in my life before. People dressed up to look as scary as possible, girls dancing away to glory on the vehicles, camera flashes seen almost every second was what made the parade so out of the world. It looked like the horror characters from all the Hollywood movies decided to make their appearance at the parade. Not only them there were ‘n’ numbers of Obama and Palin too begging people to vote for them.
Everything till now just been so spectacular and truly memorable and I know future is just going to get better. I’m anxiously looking forward for the coming months and with things like Thanksgiving and Christmas in queue it’s difficult to hold the excitement. Having completed just a little more than a month, I’ve had so many experiences that 1500 words fall too short to describe the time I’ve had so far. For me I know that this is just the beginning and the way Robert Frost puts in words I shall also say, ‘And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.’
